7 Ways to Keep an English Conversation Going

Simple phrases you can use when you don’t know what to say next.

When you’re speaking English, the hardest part is often not starting the conversation. It’s knowing what to say next. You answer a question, the other person smiles, and suddenly there is a long silence. You don’t need a perfect sentence to continue. You need a few small habits that give both people something to talk about.

1. Ask a follow-up question

Listen for one detail in the answer and ask about it. If someone says they went away for the weekend, ask where they stayed or what they enjoyed. You don’t have to introduce a completely new subject.

  • How did that go?

  • What happened next?

  • What did you like about it?

2. Show that you’re listening

Short responses help the other person feel heard. Match your response to the situation: “That sounds lovely” fits good news; “That sounds difficult” fits a problem. Use a natural voice, not the same response every time.

  • Really?

  • That makes sense.

  • No way!

TRY THIS

Instead of answering with only “yes” or “no,” add one extra sentence.

3. Ask for clarification

Missing a word doesn’t mean the conversation has failed. Ask a clear question and stay involved. You can repeat the part you understood, then check the part you missed.

  • What do you mean by that?

  • Could you say that again a little more slowly?

4. Give yourself time to think

A short pause is normal. Use a simple phrase while you decide what to say. You can speak more slowly without apologizing for your English.

  • Let me think.

  • That’s a good question.

5. Add a small detail

Instead of answering “Yes,” add a reason or an example. “Yes, I enjoy cooking. I made soup yesterday” gives the other person two easy ways to respond. One extra sentence is often enough.

6. Return the question

After sharing your answer, invite the other person in. “What about you?” is useful, but a more specific question can sound even more interested. Try “Do you usually cook at home too?”

7. Practice common topics

Choose familiar subjects: your weekend, work, food, or your city. Prepare a few ideas rather than a script. Practice answering the same question in two different ways so you aren’t depending on one memorized sentence.

A short practice task

  1. Choose one ordinary question, such as “How was your weekend?”

  2. Answer it, add one detail, and return the question.

  3. Repeat with a different answer. Notice which phrases are easier the second time.

Aim for a clear message, not a perfect performance.

In your next conversation, focus on just one habit. You don’t need to use all seven at once. A good conversation is shared work, not a test of perfect grammar.
